Consider this pronouncement, inscribed on an Assyrian tablet circa 2800 B.C.:

Our earth is degenerate these days … bribery and corruption abound, children no longer obey their parents, every man wants to write a book, and the end of the world is evidently approaching.

Space Chronicles, Neil Degrasse Tyson.

‎”Man by origin is a herd animal. His actions are determined by an instinctive impulse to follow the leader and to have close contact with other animals around him. Inasmuch as we are sheep, there is no greater threat to our existence than to lose this contact with the herd and be isolated. But we are also human; we are endowed with reason which by its very nature is independent of the herd. Rationalization is a compromise between our sheep nature and our human capacity to think. And the full emergence of reason depends on our attaining independence so that our judgment is not based on our fear of being isolated from the herd. A few individuals can stand this isolation and say the truth in spite of the danger of losing touch. They are the true heroes of the human race but for whom we would still be living in caves.
Erich Fromm (via Leila Marston)

Brahmāṇḍaḥ and Universe

For me the biggest find of 2011, the Sanskrit word for universe: ब्रह्माण्डः(brahmāṇḍaḥ) comes from the root ब्रिह्(brih) which means ‘to expand’. The modern science discovered this expanding attribute of the universe only in 1930s and the word meaning “one…something rotated, rolled, changed”- ‘universe’ is the English word.

It looks like a human was involved in choosing what went where,” Marissa told them. “It looks too editorialized. Google products are machine-driven. They’re created by machines. And that is what makes us powerful. That’s what makes our products great.

jhnmyr:

If you want to be truly intimidating,

If you want to make an impact,

If you want to have strong connections with others

just be sincere.

Sarcasm is not an attitude, and it’s not a personality trait. It’s a style of rhetoric meant to be used occasionally to highlight a larger point. Saying…

Building a durable, multi-billion dollar business takes time, and Founders Fund is the rare firm with the patience and balance sheet to participate in that process,” said Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX and co-founder of Tesla Motors and PayPal. “The world faces a number of critical, perhaps existential problems, and none of them will be resolved by investors with time horizons measured in months.

Example of the extent of politicization and harm brought about by political parties in Nepal. Scott MacLennan, the Executive Director of The Mountain Fund posted this picture with the following caption on his facebook:

Then came the biggest dissapointment of all. What should have been the most modern hospital for the entire district, serving 45,000 people with full care for all things is lost because of political fighting. Prem Tamang and his damn maoist people only want Maoists to have a hospital not all Rasuwa, so we walked away from this too. Happy Prem? You are the leader for Rasuwa and you screw your own people out of a hospital for your party needs. Welcome to the new Nepal where politicians rule and people get nothing. Well done, Prem my lad.

The difficulties of language are not negligible. One’s native speech is a closely fitting garment, and one never feels quite at ease when it is not immediately available and has to be replaced by another.

Cultural domination has been an underappreciated facet of American global power. Whatever one may think of its aesthetic values, America’s mass culture exercises a magnetic appeal, especially on the world’s youth. Its attraction may be derived from the hedonistic quality of the lifestyle it projects, but its global appeal is undeniable. American television programs and films account for about three-fourths of the global market. American popular music is equally dominant, while American fads, eating habits, and even clothing are increasingly imitated worldwide. The language of the Internet is English, and an overwhelming proportion of the global computer chatter also originates from America, influencing the content of global conversation. Lastly, America has become a Mecca for those seeking advanced education, with approximately half a million foreign students flocking to the United States, with many of the ablest never returning home. Graduates from American universities are to be found in almost every Cabinet on every continent.
